Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture

I was amazed at the huge variety of different media used in the art at the Saatchi Gallery. 'Nine,' a piece collaborated by Cuban born American artists Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz, was particularly interesting. consisting of a huge mass of old items of clothing, with the feet of nine people supporting the load, it is a testimony to the strength and value to community. As i circled around the piece i felt as though i was looking around a vintage shop, which bought back that musky old smell to my senses and that feeling you get when rummaging through endless pieces of clothing and knowing that there must be a story behind each item.

It's interesting to see Sibony's thought process behind his work. On first impressions, it is just a big plastic sheet with tape stuck on a wall. However on closer inspection, the brown tape forms a rough image of a canvas on an easel. He has made the creative process quite literally transparent.

Peter Coffin creation, 'the spiral staircase,' takes the idea of simple architectural fitting to an abstract extreme. The piece takes over one whole room to itself within the Saatchi gallery. The spiral staricase itself is a genius design, but this hits new levels. I found it very impressive.
